Co-Ops & Apprenticeships

Forestry Students

Every year, we hire students for our Canadian and American operations to get hands-on experience and training in the forest industry. Forestry students can work in three main areas: planning, operations and silviculture. Forestry terms can be four months or up to a year, depending on your institution’s program schedule and how far along you are in your school program.

To qualify for one of West Fraser’s summer student opportunities, you must be enrolled in a Forestry Degree Program or a Forestry Technical Diploma Program at an accredited post-secondary institution (such as a university, college or polytechnic institute).

- Forestry Planning allows students to implement operational planning of harvesting and road construction programs related to various forest tenures as well as other related planning duties.

- Forestry Operations exposes students to organizing and assisting with harvesting and road construction programs and inspections.

- Silviculture students will be involved in supervising planting, regeneration/free-growing surveys, insect probes, stand tending assessments, and other silviculture activities.

Application Process

We begin recruiting forestry students in October for the proceeding summer. Our job postings outline the different areas of work (silviculture, planning and operations) and all the potential locations available for summer work. Our forestry recruitment team visits universities, colleges and technical institutes to interview candidates in October and November.

Engineering Students

We offer engineering co-op opportunities in Canada and the U.S.? throughout the year in all areas of engineering. Engineering students may work in four exciting areas—production, technical, engineering and maintenance—often in, or with, several departments.

- Production is the heart of a mill.  Turning trees into wood products requires sophisticated chemical and mechanical systems, which are all controlled by high-level computerized controls.

- Technical and Engineering provide support for quality, lab testing, process optimization and project work. Students often get involved in specialized projects.

- Maintenance is critical to ensuring the we operate at sustainable, cost-effective rates.  With millions of components, this requires organized systems for asset, repair and inventory maintenance.  Students often assist in analysis and troubleshooting.

Our technically exciting facilities feature state-of-the-art processing, electrical, and mechanical systems, all in a single facility. The plants are big, complex, and dynamic operations, where each day presents an opportunity to learn from some of the best people in the industry about many different aspects of engineering.

Application Process

Engineering co-op terms happen throughout the year in all areas of engineering. Summer terms are typically four months.

To qualify for one of West Fraser’s student opportunities, you must be enrolled in a University Engineering Degree Program at an accredited post-secondary institution. Check our job postings to view available opportunities.

Other Co-Op Opportunities

Each year, West Fraser hires students for internship and co-op placements in a wide variety of roles.

Available student co-op and internship opportunities are posted on the West Fraser job board. We also highlight new opportunities on employment websites with universities, colleges, and technical institutions.
