Sustainable Forestry

Thriving, Sustainable Forests

Sustainable forestry is an approach to caring for forests, that allows for their environmental, social, cultural and economic value to be maintained. We have 100% certified responsible fibre sourcing and 100% certified sustainable forest management for our managed forest area, which encompasses approximately 8.2 million hectares of Canadian public land – nearly the size of Austria.

We strive to ensure that our working forests are regenerated for the future. Whether it is the land we directly and sustainably manage – or the land managed by our responsible suppliers – we are supporting healthy and resilient ecosystems so that forests can continue to provide the natural resources and environmental benefits we all rely on.

Environment

Research, Innovation, Improvement

Environmental excellence is foundational to operational excellence. Research, innovation and continuous improvement are helping us reduce emissions and unlock the full benefit of the resources in our value chain.

Climate action is a fundamental element of our sustainability strategy. We have validated emission reduction targets aligned with climate science and the Paris Agreement 2030 goals. We also believe that the wood products sector can be part of the climate change solution. Sustainably managed forests and sustainable harvest increases the long-term storage of carbon on the planet’s surface.

Through the natural carbon cycle and our climate action plans, West Fraser is building on our legacy of the sustainability performance of our products and enhancing the social, environmental and economic benefit in the communities in which we operate.

People & Communities

Investing in Wellbeing

Social performance is a crucial component of our sustainability strategy and the key to a culture where people – employees, communities, business partners and everyone in our chain – feel valued for their contribution and a sense of belonging.

Our approach includes a strong focus on people and company culture, reflecting not only our long-held values but a commitment to a safer, healthier, more diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce. We also aim to strengthen community relationships and investments where we work and partner.

Governance & Strategy

Measuring Sustainability Ambitions

People at all levels of our business are working to embed sustainability practices in their everyday operations and business decisions. Strong governance through leadership, committees and working groups, enables us to strategize, implement and measure our progress toward our sustainability ambitions.

Indigenous Relations

Building Meaningful Relationships

Around the world, forests are natural sources of spiritual, cultural, social, economic and environmental value for Indigenous Peoples.

We acknowledge that our forest operations in Canada take place on Indigenous Peoples’ ancestral lands and traditional territories. These lands continue to hold inherent generational value for traditional use, celebration and cultural significance.

West Fraser engages with over 100 Indigenous governments, rights holders, communities and organizations to build meaningful, long-term relationships that contribute to economic prosperity, community well-being and resilience. in recognition of those longstanding relationships, we are on a path towards achieving Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Gold certification by 2030 from the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business.
